You Deserve Better… So Buy Yourself Better Stuff

I’ve always been the type of person to hold off on buying things for myself. Sometimes it was hard to justify buying certain things. As my perspectives on material objects shifted, I was able to give up some of my hard-earned dollars for something that will last. Let me explain.

“You deserve more than mediocrity, and mediocrity in the things you use every day will make those moments mediocre.”

Don’t Get Materialistic

It’s important to note that I don’t believe that material objects will make you happy. The acquisition of objects in pursuit to find happiness in said objects is fickle and won’t bring you happiness that lasts for more than a few moments. My point is buying yourself better stuff will make the moments you use those things much more satisfying. Inversely, buying yourself crap will make those moments dissatisfying.

Research, Research, Research

Always research the company you’re giving your money to if it’s a significant purchase. I’m a huge proponent for mindful consumerism. Here are some questions I ask myself before giving a business my money.

  • Are they sustainable?
  • How is their customer service?
  • How are the reviews?
  • How do they treat their employees?
  • Where are they located?
  • Where do they manufacture?
  • What are their values?
  • What’s their brand identity?
  • Do they donate to charity?
  • Are they transparent?
  • Is this something that I really need?

The point of this article is not to encourage you to go out and make irresponsible purchases. It’s to help you be more mindful of what you’re buying for yourself. Before making a significant purchase, ask yourself these things:

  • What will I use this for?
  • Will I use it enough to justify buying it?
  • Why do I want this?
  • Can I afford this?
  • Do I actually want this?
  • Do I need this right now?
  • Is there anything better and cheaper?

You don’t need to have a positive answer for all of these, it’s up to you to decide whether or not you can justify your purchase. For example, I may want to buy myself a really nice pocket knife, but as a writer, I don’t find the need to use one all that often. I may say that I won’t use it much, but if I can afford it and everything else is good, then I’ll buy it. Remember, always use your own discretion and buy within your means.

Mindfulness in Your Purchases Will Lead to Less Buyer’s Remorse

I scour the internet to find the best products I can reasonably afford because I know that they’ll last me longer, and they’ll be more fun to use. As a result, I scarcely regret my purchases, in fact, I’m satisfied with the tools I choose to have in my life because they make those moments more fun.
